Free Software is the word presently ruling the world of computers. Small programs to big Operating systems are available with free of cost, of course in challenging standards.
Need of Free Software
As everybody knows, to do anything with computers it requires a software. Purchasing software for every requirement would be a costly affair for students, less income people.
Not only the matter of cost. Every moment requirements of users are changing and increasing, which is not meeting with the supply of Software companies. When demand is more and supply is less obviously the cost will be high. At the same time as internet is growing distribution of digital stuff is also increasing. Free software features with almost equal to the commercial software are available with free of cost. So in users point of view putting high value on drastic changing product seems not beneficiary. Hence many users are opting for Free Software.
What is a Free Software..?
Free Software Definition:
Richard Stallman a free software activist, who dedicated his life on Free software movement defined Free software in 1986, which was published by FSF (Free Software foundation).
A software is a free software if people who receive a copy of the software have the following four freedoms.(The numbering begins with zero since many computer systems use zero-based numbering.)
- Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
- Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
- Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
- Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.
Freedoms 1 and 3 require source code to be available because studying and modifying software without its source code is highly impractical.
Many words like Freeware, Shareware, Adware, Trialware, Freebies etc.. are using in alternative meaning of Free software with variety of license types. But honestly speaking many of these are not belongs to Free Software, since many of them won’t allow for open source modification as well as free distribution.
However, if the purpose of user is serving with free of cost (may be temporarily) and it is a software so why not it is a free software. This is one strong argument from one side. What do you think..? What is your opinion on Free Software..? How the free software should be..? I would be happy if i see your valuable feelings on Free Software through comments.
